EGR valves

By necessity, every combustion engine produces harmful nitrogen oxides that are released into the environment. To reduce pollutant emissions, the so-called exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was introduced. The EGR valve is part of this system and has the task of dosing the amount of nitrogen oxides to be returned and lowering the exhaust gas temperature. This valve is usually found on the exhaust manifold or on the intake manifold.

A distinction is made between pneumatic and electric EGR valves: The former function via electromagnetic valves by means of negative pressure, which is either tapped from the intake manifold or created by a vacuum pump. Electric EGR valves require neither vacuum nor solenoid valves, as in this case the control unit is responsible for generating and transmitting the necessary voltage.

If the EGR valve is defective, the exhaust gas values are no longer correct – and pollutant emissions increase. Often it is due to damaged cables or seals of the valve. But defects in the mass airflow sensor, pressure transducer or thermo valve can also be behind this. Without properly functioning exhaust gas recirculation, you will not be able to pass the next TÜV test due to the excessively high exhaust gas values.

If black smoke is coming out of the exhaust, the engine power is getting lower or the check engine light is illuminated, you should check the valve promptly to ensure that it is functioning properly and, if necessary, get a new EGR valve.
