Hydraulic steering gears are standard in newer vehicle models. This reduces the effort required to control the wheels to a minimum. Thanks to power steering, minimal turns of the steering wheel are all it takes to steer your car where you want it to go. If you are still driving an older model, however, it is quite possible that you are still dealing with a mechanical steering system.

Most hydraulic steering gears have a rack and pinion steering system. The control can be purely hydraulic or electric-hydraulic – as in the popular VW Polo 9N, for example. If the steering gear is defective, the power transmission between the steering wheel and the wheels is disturbed. In this case, you should therefore order a new steering gear as soon as possible. After the change, you should definitely have a wheel alignment carried out.
