Wheel bearings

In passenger cars, wheel bearings have the task of guiding and supporting shafts and axles. They are also responsible for getting the tyres rolling. Alongside shock absorbers, chassis springs and other components, wheel bearings are a central part of the chassis. They must be able to withstand the axial and radial forces that occur during travel.

Two different types of wheel bearings are used in passenger cars: ball bearings and tapered roller bearings. All wheel bearings consist of an outer and an inner ring as well as the rolling elements. The latter can be either rolls or balls. While driving, the balls or rollers now transfer the forces from one ring to the other, creating high friction. To keep the resulting friction as low as possible, there is a grease filling inside the wheel bearing.
